Jill Kirwan, a native of Montreal, has played horn professionally since the tender age of eighteen years.
At 19 she won the "Prix de Foundation des Amis des Arts" at the Montreal Symphony Young People's Competition for the most promising young wind player. While in Montreal, she performed with the Grand Ballets Orchestra, C.B.C. Orchestra, Orchestre Metropolitain, I Musici de Montreal, McGill Chamber Orchestra and the L'Opera de Montreal. She worked extensively with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra as an extra musician from 1971 - 1994, participating in many concerts, tours and recordings.
In 1986 Jill was appointed to the position of "third french horn" of the National Arts Centre Orchestra; a position she continues to hold today. She is principal horn of the Ottawa Symphony
Orchestra, and is a regular performer at the Ottawa Chamber Music Festival. Jill is a member of the Rideau Lakes Brass Quintet/(Ottawa Brass), the Capital Brassworks Ensemble, and the Ayorama Woodwind Quintet.
Educating young people about the joys of music is a strong interest of Jill's. She performs about a dozen concerts a year in schools around the Ottawa/Hull region with the Rideau Lakes and Ayorama Quintets. Besides having a busy career, Jill enjoys travelling, spending time with her daughter, two dogs and a cat, hiking, reading, cooking and the company of good friends.
Jill is our guest soloist for our final concert of the 2000 - 2001 season, "Music for French Horn and Strings", on 26 and 27 May 2001.
