Paul Whiteley
       Violas

Paul Whiteley has played viola for 25 years, after a fairly short and
undistinguished career on the violin.   He became the first non-founding member of Strings of St. John's, after having performed many of the major works of orchestral and string repertoire with the Guelph Youth Orchestra, the Concorde String Ensemble of the Suzuki School of Guelph, the Queen's University Orchestra, the Kingston Symphony, and the Divertimento Orchestra of Ottawa. Paul has also taken the lowest part available in a succession of choirs, and looks forward to singing in Leipzig with the Ottawa Bach Choir in May, 2005.  Paul works in the Standards Division of Statistics Canada; he is also the founder and musical director of elbmesne ensemble.

Mary Young
       Violas

Mary Young is a violist from Sarnia, Ontario.  She studied viola with Ralph Aldrich in London before studying physics at the University of Waterloo.  She moved to Ottawa in 1992 to begin a career in the semiconductor component industry.  Mary has played in a number of amateur orchestras and chamber ensembles over the past two decades and is a founding member of The Strings of St. John's. She recently moved to Stittsville with her husband, Mark, and his three boys, Connor, Spenser, & Devin.  Besides making music, she enjoys hiking, biking, running, walking her dog and watching minor hockey.

Margaret Anderson
       Violas

Margaret Anderson has played with the Strings of St. John's from the beginning, alternating between violin and viola. Born in Winnipeg, Margaret studied with Mary Graham Rourke and later with Joseph Berlyawski in Ottawa.  She played with the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra for over 25 years.  Currently Margaret enjoys playing quartets and studying the harp as a hobby.

Julian Hughson
     Violas

Julian Hughson began playing the violin and viola in Wales where he played with the National Youth orchestra as well as other regional orchestral and chamber groups. Since coming to Canada he has continued to play with various orchestras in Ottawa area including the Ottawa and Nepean Symphony Orchestras. Before joining the Strings of St John's he was concertmaster of Divertemento Orchestra and is also principal violist with the Kanata Symphony Orchestra.

Kate Church
         Violas

Originally from Grimsby , Ontario , Kate began studying the violin at the age of 9. She has enjoyed playing with numerous ensembles over the years, including the Niagara Youth Orchestra and Queen's University Orchestra. While studying nursing at Queen's, Kate took up an interest in the viola. She subsequently played as principle violist for the Queen's Orchestra, and as a member of the viola section of the Kingston Symphony. Since moving to Ottawa , Kate has thoroughly enjoyed playing viola with the Strings of St. John's . She continues to play the violin as well, and is a member of the Ottawa Chamber Orchestra. Kate takes a break from her musical endeavours to work as a Registered Nurse at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute.
