Regina de Hoog
in memoriam

Regina de Hoog, a founding member of the Strings of St John's, passed away Friday, July 2, 2010 after a brief battle with a rare disorder of the immune system. She was a lively, vivacious musician whose great enthusiasm for the Strings of St John's was an important factor in the orchestra's growth as well as the cohesion among the members. In the early days of her illness, she timed her treatments so as to not interfere with her orchestra commitments, such was her devotion.  In the end, her husband Adriaan, daughter Ariane and son Julian were with her as she gently drifted away with much dignity during her sleep.

A ceremony commemorating Regina will be held at St John’s Church (Elgin Street at Somerset) on Saturday, 10th July at 4:00 p.m. Following the ceremony there will be an open reception at the National Arts Centre, Fountain Room, from 5:15 to 7:30 p.m. where an exhibition of her paintings will be on view.

Regina’s biography.

Welcome to our web home!

The Strings of St John's is a chamber orchestra based in downtown Ottawa at the Church of St John the Evangelist.

Now in its eleventh season, this 22-member ensemble presents a yearly series of concerts exploring the vast repertoire for string orchestra, featuring well-known local artists.

The conductor of the Strings of St John's,
Gordon Johnston, is Director of Music at the Church of St John the Evangelist. Gordon is well-known in the National Capital Region as a choral and orchestral conductor. From 1993 to 2007, hundreds of people have participated in his annual winter oratorio performances co-sponsored by CAMMAC, the Ottawa Chamber orchestra (1994 - 2002), and the Strings of St John's (2003-2007). His lively style and interesting programming help make every concert by the Strings of St John's an entertaining and musically exciting event.

Janet Roy, the Strings of St John’s concertmaster, is a familiar performer on the Ottawa classical music scene. During her very successful thirty-year tenure as principal second violin of the National Arts Centre Orchestra (NACO), Janet played solos in many European cities and at Carnegie Hall in New York. In 2000, she stepped down from the NACO and a few months later assumed her duties as concertmaster with the Strings of St John’s. She was featured in the orchestra’s 2005-2006 concerts as solo violin in Fall, Winter, Spring and Summer from The Four Seasons by Antonio Vivaldi.

The Strings of St John’s gratefully acknowledges the financial support of the City of Ottawa.
